The Christmas season is a time of festivities, family reunions, and feasting. Its very easy to use the holidays are an excuse to throw diet and exercise plans out the window until the new year. If you can really try to keep up your healthy habits this will not only help you avoid any holiday weight gain, but may also assist you in overcoming the winter blues and reducing stress.
Here are a few tips I’ve tried and tested to help you have a good holiday time;
Cold and Flu’s avoidance/remedies;
Eat fresh foods and try to keep up your exercise.
At this time of year we are all more susceptible to cold and flu viruses. The colder drier air in winter allows the viruses to be more stable and airborne longer than at other times of year. Fortunately we have Guna Complex n.1 to aid our own natural defences. It is a complex homeopathic medicine for children and adults I’ve had good results for the prevention and treatment of influenza and para-influenza. It helps to increase the response of our own natural immune cells, and avoids the problem of drift in the virus which so often renders the antibody response of the flu vaccine ineffective. Guna Complex n.1 is now MHRA registered and can be dispensed without the need for a consultation. This is a regular remedy used by my clients.
Stress
Laugh often; Research from Indiana State University College of Nursing and University of South Florida shows ‘that the act of laughter can lead to immediate increases in heart rate, respiratory rate, respiratory depth and oxygen consumption. These increases are then followed by a period of muscle relaxation, with a corresponding decrease in heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure’
When the going gets tough SLOW DOWN. Take 5 mins to sit calmly concentrating on your breath, breathing in while you count slowly for a count of four. Exhale while you count to eight. Repeat for one minute. The trick is to always exhale for twice as long as you inhale. This helps muscles relax, heart rate decrease and improve your mood!
Neurexan is on my go to list of remedies for stress. Using this helps make it possible to cope better with psychological strain in stressful situations without mental functions being impaired.
Aromatherapy-book a relaxing aromatherapy session and also have Live Well Clinic make you personally tailored aromatherapy oil to use at home. I always have Lavender essential oil to hand its calming scent can help make it an excellent tonic for the nerves, sleep and anxiety issues.
Digestive problems
Eating sensibly at Christmas can be a challenge, aim to plate your food and sit down to eat it. This helps you to portion control and be aware of the amount you’re eating. . Research has highlighted that healthy belly bacteria helps with digestive disorders and with mood, use probiotics. I have lots of clients whose daily health has been improved by the use of the correct probiotics for their needs. I would be more than happy to advise you on this need.
Colostro Noni a food supplement created with care by Guna in Italy using up to date science and nature. I just love this remedy and the results my clients are reporting for IBS and IBD. It contains bovine colostrum and Noni (Morinda Citrifolia) plant extract.and helps to Preserve the tissue integrity of the digestive mucosa and a good intestinal flora balance.
• Guna Basic –mentioning it again this month because this is probably the time of year when it’s needed most. It helps to alkalise your body and counteract any overindulgence issues. Its indications include high protein diet, if you smoke, drink alcohol, have a sedentary lifestyle or are under stress.
Alcohol
Parties, eating out and extra social events can mean your alcohol intake increases. Be drink aware and know your limitations. There is a remedy in the homeopathic tradition that I prescribe called Nux Vomica Homaccord-yep it sounds yucky but it is one I prescribe if the client needs to Detox after overindulgence . Nux Vomica is the major digestive remedy used by many homoeopaths, it helps with nausea, sour burping, bloating a few hours after eating, indigestion, heartburn and digestion after effects after eating rich foods, spicy foods or overeating and drinking.
To conclude on recent research I love . Scientists have found that drinking three glasses of champagne per week can help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease,
A compound found in Pinot noir and Pinot meunier grapes used to make bubbly, is said to prevent the onset of the brain diseases.
The research, which was based on an experiment involving rats, was published by Reading University.
Academics have said people who regularly drink champagne up to three times each week could also boost their spatial memory.
They now hope to carry out the experiment on pensioners. Professor Jeremy Spencer said: “The results were dramatic.’’!! I’m sorry Im not a pensioner
So have yourself a relaxing, rejuvenating and reinvigorating holiday. Laugh often and have a balanced approach to food and drink .
When you’re ready to Detox and set those health goals for 2017 give Live Well clinic a call. I use and prescribe therapies and remedies that will activate your body’s healing restorative power. Always gentle and always bespoke to your needs.
